Catalina Island’s past has shaped this beautiful destination into a traveler’s dream. Iconic landmarks still stand today to showcase the legacy of Avalon’s rich history. The outside terrace at the Catalina Casino in Avalon.

Catalina Casino

Where visitors once danced to the sounds of Big Band music and the first theatre was built for “talkies”, the iconic Catalina Casino is famous to many. It’s hard to miss this Art Deco masterpiece when arriving to Avalon, as it’s a sight for sore eyes.

The Catalina Casino first made its appearance in 1929, showcasing the style and romance of this beloved Island. It was originally built for visitors traveling 22-miles across the sea to partake in the Casino’s nightlife of a movie, dinner and dancing.

The Avalon Theatre was the first venue built specifically for “talkies” on the lower level of the Catalina Casino. All are welcome to see classic films that are shown on Friday and Saturday evenings. On the top level, is the world’s largest circular ballroom and a wraparound terrace with views of Avalon Bay. The Catalina Casino continues to host many major events year-round in the ballroom.

Today, the Catalina Casino is open to the public offering two different experiences of viewing this historic landmark. A General Admission ticket allows you to explore the Casino at your own pace with access to the Avalon Theatre, Ballroom and the Ocean Promenade. For a more behind-the-scenes look, the Casino VIP Backstage tour is a guided experience of areas that many don’t get the chance to see!   A group of visitors walking towards the Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden.

Wrigley Memorial and Botanic Garden

In 1919, William Wrigley Jr. had a vision to turn Catalina Island into a remarkable location for future generations when he decided to purchase controlling interest of the Catalina Island Company. His legacy and vision continue to live on today.

The Wrigley Memorial was created to honor William Wrigley Jr.’s memory and all that he has done for Catalina Island. The memorial is the centerpiece of the Botanic Garden with spectacular views of Avalon Canyon. Paying tribute to the Island, the Wrigley Memorial also features local stone and famed Catalina tile.

The Botanic Garden started in 1935 as Ada Wrigley’s private desert plant collection. Her beloved garden featured 38 acres of remarkable exotic specimens. In the 1970s, the Botanic Garden was refreshed with an emphasis on the native and endemic species of Catalina Island.

Catalina Chimes Tower

Celebrating its 100th year, the Catalina Chimes Tower was brought to life in December of 1925. The Catalina Chimes Tower is located above Avalon Bay, across from the Zaney Grey Pueblo Hotel.

The Deagan Westminster chimes were purchased by William Wrigley Jr. in 1925, then a Spanish-style structure was built to house the chimes. Ada Wrigley’s goal for the Chimes Tower was to add another piece of character to Catalina and to bring a melodic sound across Avalon for years to come. The Catalina Chimes strike on the quarter of every hour from 8am to 8pm.
